Starts With One (Ends with One)

The Number 23 - Jim Carrey has tried to "branch out as an actor" ever since Man on the Moon — at least i think that was the kicker. Whatever, it was that made him change, he finally did a movie that very un-Ace Ventura. After the first 30 minutes or so were up, the movie gets progressively darker, and less and less funny. He keeps the same general upbeat, quirky appeal that all his characters have, but in this movie, that goes away pretty fast. Walter (Carrey) picks up a book that eventually controls his life. Without going into too much detail, the movie takes some twists and turns which keeps it interesting up until the end. Really, if you watch enough movies you should be able to predict what will happen, so it's not completely original, but at the same time it's a well told story. Jim Carrey narrates the movie and as he reads the book you slip into these stylistic "imagination sequences" which are probably adds up to be the best part of the film. All in all I liked it.
