Only the Best for Baby

Top Movie of 2007:
No Country For Old Men
Just as most Coen Brothers movies, this movie was a masterpiece. From start to finish you are on the edge of your seat with no music to add tension to the scenes. This is exactly what i mean when i talk about making an old story fresh again. Basically it was a retelling of the age-old, "finding someone else's treasure" story. Movies have become a cookie cutter of the same old story, just substituting characters out and changing the title, but The Coen Bros owned this one.

Top Album of 2007:
Thrice - The Alchemy Index: Fire & Water
Thrice has been around for a while and they have gone through quiet the change since i had first heard them. They are certainly not the hardcore/metal band i got into long ago, but unlike some bands, i was able to embrace their change. This CD (actually a dual EP set) was part of a concept album collection theme-ing music to each of the four elements; fire, water, earth, and air. Right there, is already calling out, "kick ass, baby". Fire was a little less fast paced and a little softer than i would have liked, but still a solid CD filled with good songs. Water was exactly how i envisioned it to be, with the killer track "the Whaler". This being there 4th effort says volumes about the band, and that their music is maturing with my musical taste.

Thanks Aaron for the idea of doing a "best of". i hope everyone wasn't too bored reading it.

I Can Hear You Now.

Top Albums of 2007

#2
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

I almost forgot how amazing this cd was until i went back to play it after i decided to do this list. Pretty much everything about this release is amazing, from the album art, to the music videos and of course the songs.

#3
Angels & Airwaves - I-Empire

An addictive album that I couldn't keep out of my car stereo. I can't say it's for everyone, but i certainly enjoyed it as much as the last A&A cd i picked up.

4. the Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
5. The Almost - Southern Weather
6. Coheed and Cambria – No World for Tomorrow
7. Circa Survive - On Letting Go
8. Darkest Hour - Deliver Us
9. Minus The Bear - Planet Of Ice
10. Dear And The Headlights - Small Steps Heavy Hooves

Honorable Mentions:
Dethklok - Dethalbum
The Panic Division – Songs from the Glasshouse
Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me
Timbaland - Shock Value

Biggest Surprise Album of the Year:
Bright Eyes - Cassadaga

Other Mentionable Albums(in no particular order):
Sherwood - A Different Light
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
the Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Yellowcard - Paper Walls
Tegan & Sara - The Con
Comeback Kid - Broadcasting
Iron & Wine - The Shepard’s Dog
Mae - Singularity
Saves the Day - Under the Boards

For being as into music as i claim i am, i don't talk about it in my blog as much as you might think, so this is kinda catching up. It was hard for me to pick favorites year, and i'm not sure if thats a good or a bad thing, but because of this all of the rankings where pretty close. Enjoy. Check back to see the number ones.

Are You There?

There are certain things i miss about rural Pa, that just aren't the same out in the city. Stars are one of those things. I was stopped dead in my tracks tonight. I had to back up, lean onto my car, and just gaze into the glory of the sky. I love looking at the stars and wondering who might be simultaneously looking at the the same set. I think i caught a glimpse of a shooting star... so i made a wish. I never really have good luck with wishes, but i figured maybe i was due.

goodnight.

Touch of Nothing.

the amount of games that i have played this year, that were new to 2007, was too little, so i only put up what i felt was the best game of '07 and the runner up versus a top 5.

Game of the Year
Halo 3
Based upon the fact that Halo has been around for as long as it has, and still manages to deliver a solid playing experience is reason enough for me. But the fact that i am still playing the game months after it's release is amazing. Halo lets me keep in touch with my friends through online matches. There is a ranking system, plenty of achievements to master, and new maps that just came out. Bungie went all out on this one and for me, though other games excelled in other departments, this game still came out on top.

Runner-up
Super Mario Galaxy
Innovative, fairly long, and a lot of fun to play. There isn't a whole lot of re-playability besides the fact that when you beat the game you unlock a hidden character. The fact that Mario has been around with the same characters, music, sound effects, EVERYTHING, since before i was born... is pretty nuts.

Music next time, this one could be tough.

You Caught My Eye.

Top Movies of 2007

#2
Superbad

After seeing it a second time it might be the funniest and most quotable movie i have seen in a long, long while, with the addition of a well executed 70's retro theme.

#3
300

What it lacked in depth, it made up for in everything else 10 fold.

#4
The Darjeeling Limited

This is a close 4th. What can i say, Wes Anderson doesn't disappoint.

#5
Live Free or Die Hard

The entertainment value was through the roof.

Honorable Mentions:
- Knocked Up (really funny, but maybe not well rounded enough to make it)
- Transformers (making my childhood favorite cool again was it's only real appeal)
- Juno (the writing was it's blessing and it's curse)
- American Gangster (too long, but superb acting and decent story)
- Grindhouse (fun, visionary movies from two good directors, just not good enough)

Best Surprise of the Year:
Sweeney Todd

Biggest Disappointment:
Spider-man 3
Pirates 3

Stay tuned for #1. Games next time.

Taking Back Nature

Nicks tattoo.

As you may remember, i actually attempted to "pre-design" a tattoo for Nick before the great Tim Kern got his hands on it. If you forget what i did for him, click here. Yeah, i know, nothing a like, but thats only because his is way better. He still has about 2 more sections, and by the end it will be colored.

Also, Nick got the job at Rockstar Games! i'm proud of my baby boy. As a "thanks", i got a bunch of GTA swag.

Rural Starlight

Merry F*cking Christmas! I hope everyone got what they deserved this year. =)

I was going to post some pictures of what rural Pennsylvania Christmas' look like, but i forgot the USB cord for my camera. Maybe later.

I got a lot of nice presents this year. But, as cheesy as it sounds, some of the best presents this year for me is "presence." Family, friends, and God. So, thanks.

The Christmas Mix

Enjoy some of [adult swim]'s Holiday cards.

After Christmas i will be posting my top 5 games, movies, and albums of 2007, just before the new year.

Here's a quick update:
I drove home again for Christmas, and about 19 hours later I made it there. Last time i made this trip i was still awake enough to get on here and blog before i went to bed. This time i passed straight out. Besides the cost of gas being slightly more money this time, i also managed to pull in a $150 speeding ticket from the state of Indiana. Thanks Indiana.
It doesn't take me long to fall into routine, so by morning, my friends where already calling to see if i could hang out. What a good feeling, definitely a feeling of want and importance. After catching up my mom and Stan (my stepdad) over breakfast/lunch, i took a trip to the "Beer Mart" with a couple of friends. Then, back to the video games i felt i left in Pennsylvania. It kinda sucks because i was backed into a spot wear i had to choose who i wanted to hang out with. The group i ended up with was a group of friends that hadn't been together since preschool. Separately, we have seen each other for a couple of years after that. But even so, it was a jaw dropping event. Jed, who is still in medical school at Jefferson in Philly, has probably led the most interesting life of us 4 in only 23 years. He has been to missions in Rwanda, and running with the bulls in Spain, and helped rebuild New Orleans just to mention a few. Jen and Jon were the other two, which i have actually seen fairly recently. The J Crew. To sum things up here, it was a great time catching up, there were endless things to talk about, never a dull moment for any of us i don't think. Things like this really remind you of what this season is really all about; Kindred-ship, either family or friends.
Today; football, more friends, and good east coast pizza and wings. i think i weigh 10 pounds more.
Tomorrow it looks as if i will be going up to my uncles house with my dad and sister... which i haven't done in years. I hope it works out.

"ho ho hopefully this holiday will make us believe that, were exactly where were supposed to be."

Hard to Swallow.

Last night i took my work home with me. unfortunately, my art director didn't appreciate the result. So, now the internet gets a taste because *EDIT* doesn't own it, i do. If i'm lucky, i will still use it later on something else.

Today after my 9 hours of work, i took a break to go see Sweeney Todd, and then back to work for another 2 hours after that. SO, more tomorrow... because right now, i am still at work and i want to leave.

*EDIT*
Based upon what my anonymous tipsters mysteriously threatening comments, i decided to take down image just in case. I'm upset that something that i do on my own time at home, as soon as it touches *EDIT* ground it's theirs. sigh.

Damn These Awkward Hands

This was the most interesting weekend i have had in a while. Definitely in a good way.

Saturday was covered in snow. I just wish i had taken some pictures because judging by the forecast, by the end of the say tomorrow the snow and ice will only be a memory. I did manage to get out Saturday night, and it was WELL worth my time.

Sunday, today, was basically how it was meant to be, based around religion. After church this morning, we made a quick stop at Bo-Lings for lunch, and then off to more church. People see black churches on TV and in the movies, but who actually gets to experience it. I went and loved it. It was surreal. Entering the church service at 3 in the afternoon, this is what happened;
sat through 3 rappers,
2 def-poets,
2 amateur singers,
a dance troop,
a mime,
sang in 3 gospel congregation worships (one of which included the whole church holding hands),
all the while being one of six total white people,
getting out 3 hours later, and had their hands hurt and voice scratchy afterwards.
How many people can say they have done the same? If you haven't before, you should try it. Besides the fact of it being long, and draining, it was amazing.
After that, Heather, Aaron and I headed to meet up with some new friends to make gingerbread houses. Despite the fact that mine was an ugly mess, it was the perfect way to cap off a day. I had enough fun to last me a lifetime. Pictures to follow.

I really liked who i was this weekend.

This Friday, I will be making my long trek home. 17 hours. Me, my friend Emily, energy drinks, an iPod full of music to sing too, and plenty of conversation. I'm excited to be home.

Something Good. Run With It.

Here is a thank you card i threw together for my friend Nick to send out while he was interviewing. With a little more time i could have made it look a lot better, but with the time constraints, i think it turned out OK. It got some good reactions with the people at Rockstar Games and some his friends.

He has another interview on Friday (i guess that means i will have to make a few more cards up...meh). Here's routing for you Nick!

Abortion

Update on Richard Quest:

Finnish Newspapers Reported.
The gay Jewish guy is Richard, the Jolly bearded guy is Santa, the card in their hands is the one we designed for them (notice the huge-ass Hallmark logo we slapped on the back so people know).

Whispy Winter Weather

Gemini Card Company

This weather reminds me of back home. It makes me miss it. There's about an inch of snow that covers the ground and it's cool. Something about this weather doesn't make me cold right away, but it has a very specific feel to it.

Big weekend planned.

Off the Horse, but Back in the Saddle.

I'm dedicating this blog post to my domestic side... sometimes, I'm slightly more domestic than i might like... luckily, it is in a boyish artistic way.

Thanksgiving's Rice Crispy Turkey
Thanks Em for modeling that leg.

"Light My Tree" Christmas Party's Anatomically Correct Gingerbread People
It was almost too easy with the supplies i had to work with.

Kosher Wine and Wii Party/Potluck
This might require a little more explaining. Though it was called kosher, the food didn't necessarily have to be. Follow? Basically, because it was the first day of Hanukah today, the same day as my potluck, some how the choice was made of have it a Jewish food theme. This is the result of the stew i made for it. It definitely seemed like a hit. I wish i was smart enough to have taken a "before picture" as well. Thanks to those who made my little get together a personal success.

Sometimes, i just enjoy rocking out.

Better Than That

Happy Friday (er, Saturday now)!

Evel Knievel

This jump, in 1967, could have killed Evel, but only put him in a coma for 29 days. Instead, he died today, Nov. 30th, 2007 of diabetes. If this teaches us anything it's; to take risks. Don't be afraid to do what you want and what makes you happy. In the end, if you survived, it only made you stronger. Also, possibly that unbalanced blood sugar levels are deadlier than wicked high jumps. You decide. Either way, as hero and icon to many, rest in peace Evel Knievel.
