Where I Was Back Then.

LA Pop Art.
You can't really appreciate this poster until you enlarge the above image. It's the entire script of Godfather set in only different thicknesses of hand-done type to create a portrait of Marlon Brando. I think i messed my pants when i saw this. They have a bunch of other great prints that you should go check out, but I know one person in particular that will love this particular piece. I can actually afford the poster versions of their work, so i may buy one. But then again, this has giving me a couple good ideas of my own. =)

I hardly post at all anymore let alone write "design" posts. WIth any luck i will get back on the ball with some good research.

Lost Without Limitations

Stefan Stagmeister was at Hallmark today. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out either (well maybe a little, but i won't go into it because it's not really relevant). SO, he came and won me over immediately with this Austrian accent. Just as Chip Kidd, Stephan grounded me on the design world outside of Hallmark and gave me perspective. Stephan's latest project was involving a diary that he kept. In the diary were statements like, "Keeping a diary supports personal developement." He used these to create his book Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far. The book is filled with innovative and often traditional typographic solutions for his "things he learned". So many of the things he mentions i struggle with myself... it was pretty much the perfect time for him to come. The "book" is actually a collection of books each with interchangeable covers for the die-cut in the sleeve. It's pretty super... i must say. Ok, enough of that. I just think Mr Stagmeister is pretty swell if you couldn't tell. ..

I was pretty homesick at the end of this weekend. It's slightly better now, but there was so many things about being home that i miss. I miss my friends back home a lot... i have to say though, if it wasn't for the awesome new friends i have met out here in Kansas City, i would probably be insane...

Good Morning February.

To me, this is going out with a bang. Lettering training is over, so i will take it down a notch with the posting (at least when it comes to type). Maybe i will complain more about life... would you like that? hm? Who knows. Anyhow, the awesome Jeremy Pettis! Typography treatment for 26 different animals. Each one unique and beautiful.

So, a short story; today i was basically forced to watch something i should have been more than willing to watch on my own. His name is Rives (pronounced reevs), and he was here for Hallmark's Word Week. Upon watching the video i was in love. Not as much with the man (though he was quite the looker), but rather with the words, and the concept. It really reminded me of when i used to write poetry. I call it that, but in reality it was just mush on a Word document, blog, or in the column of a notebook page. But this is what romance sounded like. Even the way Rives moved his hands was poetry. It was so "gorgeous" and perfect, that after smiles, only came envy. I can already feel it flowing through me. The will to make words flow like blood through veins. And will I? possibly. Right now? You decide.

This is what it's like living your life always wanting to be somebody else...

A Babe Among the Wolves

Because most people don't watch Cartoon Network as much as i do i figured i would pass this one along. The Hives - Fall is Just Something That Grown-ups Invented. Beautifully illustrated and LETTERED video made for a promo spot with CN's new image. I believe the work is done by Shilo Creative, thats who did the short version of the commercial at least. There is also an other commercial with a tween boy rapping, with a similar style... but i can't find it on the internet anywhere. however, when i do find it, you will be seeing it. Word.

Heartbreaking Happiness.

This is probably my favorite motion typography video. It was created for a senior project by college students. Nuts. The song, if you were wondering, is "the Hush Sound - Lions Roar".

Some people have been upset that i am not posting my drama on here... sometimes i want to, i won't lie. The truth is, January is going pretty crappy, (grant it, this week so far hasn't been horrible, but there is still time) and i just don't really feel like talking about it. You can all gasp in utter shock now. We'll see what next month is like... but for now i am going to still try and post typography/design related material.

Two Smirks Don't Make A Smile.

I, personally, have not recieved this House Industries catalog yet but i am pretty excited after seening this.
You really can't talk about screen type without mentioning House. They are pretty much the standard now.

I am the Resolution

This is only 6 designs in a TREASURE TROVE of supreme screen prints byMethane Studios. Surprisingly, Dave Matthew's actually has some awesome posters out there, and i'm going to go ahead and say this studio probably made all of them. I guess i just just assumed the posters where only made by stoners throwing the firedancer symbol and concert dates on an 11x17. I guess i was wrong. These are a perfect example of incorporative, fitted and nested type. My favorite. Other than posters for sale, they also have some pretty sweet t-shirts.

The Missouri Breaks.

Type experiment by someone whose name i couldn't even begin to prononce Thijs Verbeek. It's really kinda creepy... but pretty excellent at the same time.

Go to a Hallmark Gold Crown store and check out the (RED) line. it's pretty spectacular.

Things are nuts right now.

Love Like Water (and Everyone but Me is Drowning)

I love these motion graphics they get me every time. i don't even know what this one is saying, i just know it's beautiful.

James Brown's Super Bad remixed with motion graphics. A definite winner.

This month will be typography focused. I figured i would start out with something fun. Enjoy.

It Takes More Than A Year to Make A Legend

The days are getting shorter, the mornings cooler... the TV better. Fall is here. Officially, yesterday was the first day, but it certainly didn't feel like it. Neither did today for that matter, but it was still dark when i woke up and that was tough.

A year ago, Saturday, I was out here for a year. I hadn't start work yet, but I moved in the last week of September, knowing only two people well enough to call friends. Today, i am not doing to much different from when i first got here; sitting in front of my computer, blogging, with the TV on in the background. Then again a lot has changed. I am trying to make due with what i have been dealt, but sometimes it's tough. Things are starting to get easier. My mind is definitely in a different place than i was 3 months ago. Or even a month.

I got a Hand Job today. Don't worry, it's a book... a type book. And it's pretty much awesome. It's by Michael Perry who i have mentioned before. This is the coolest book i own, hands down. If you want to take a look at it, just ask. Here are some images per Amazon:

Halo 3 comes out tomorrow... today, whatever, 9/25. I admit, I'm gay for Halo. I will get it soon, but probably not until the weekend.

Teeth Marks.

Lisa Rienermann

This is the hotness. Beautiful idea, and the execution is right on. The "d" and the "k" are my personal favorite. I know this image is alittle small, however you can get a slightly larger version if you head to the link. You can also buy a book if you are really into it. Of course, besides all that, the site in a different language so i can't even begin to understand where they are going with the product.

Brand New. This sort of stuff always interested me. The name is dead on; a site about updated logos. Get it? I LOVE to see a logo get "updated." Some need it, others never did, and their commentary on many of the logos is damn truth. "If it's not broke don't fix it." The trend of gradients, transparencies, lower-case letters and alike escapes me. AT&T is a perfect example of all of these fopa's.
Brand New's latest post is about "Armor All". Ironically, i had just bought some wipes for my car and commented to myself how the logo is different, and i feel much, much better.

I'm in the slow process of rebranding myself. Maybe you will see evidence of that soon.

Also, I have been putting off posting about this project they are calling "1-18-08", aka "Cloverfield" for some time now. With the buzz thats going around right now, you have no doubt already heard about it. But i will get into some great deal later... just not now.

edit: i need to start reading these posts before i publish them. god, i suck.

The New Heart Shopping.

Jeremy Pettis.
More type. i know. But i love good typography.

Guerra de la Paz
doing some pretty sweet stuff with action figures, and fabrics. Enjoy.

After a long weekend of fun-filled excitement and uproarious behaviour from Lauren, her sister Emily, and her best friend Melissa. I learned the secret language of "Op", sudoku, and new ways to have fun. The group is obviously a good one or else i probably wouldn't have kept coming back. With the Plaza Friday evening and Saturday morning, and Legends on Sunday afternoon, the weekend was mostly shopping. I got a couple things, i feel like i need to be more creative with my wardrobe now. We went to Worlds of Fun Saturday night, that was a lot of fun. It was like discovering a part of Missouri I had never seen (even though literally it was, i mean figuratively). It has been quite some time since i have been on a roller coaster, running around the park, just having a good time like a teenager. If you get the chance, go. Come Friday, I feel like i wil get more of this kind of fun, being that i will be going home to be with highschool friends. Until then though, there is a decent amount of work to be done.

love, Josh

Anniversary of Nothing

Another rainy day in Missouri. I remain heart broken. Today will be especially hard. I had planned to take Heather out to dinner tonight and have a nice romantic evening. Obviously, that won't be the case.

Thats one of my illustrations. this particular character, of myself, i have been drawing the longest out of all of my others. i like how he has gotten progressingly uglier as time progressed. He is a much simpler design but i believe it was for the better. it's too bad i suck as an illustrator.

Mike Perry. Midwest is Best.
I loves me some typography. His illustrations are awesome too. I am getting the impression that most people have viewed this site well before i have... but i am going to post it anyhow, because i think his stuff is just neato. Besides, i haven't really come across anything else worth posting.

If you enjoy looking at what you can't afford to do to your place (i know i am!), then this is the site to visit. Modern interior design in wealthy homes.

At work, none of MY designs were picked in the line-up. "Too alternitive looking" they say. I'm just sick. Today sucks, as usual. Enjoy the sites, i am going to go sulk over what work i have.

Missouri Knows the Feeling.

A muggy, overcast day in Missouri today. We feel the same.

It's a struggle to find something interesting to do today. It's another slow day here at Hallmark. That means "Research Day"! See at Hallmark there is never a point where you are doing "nothing," if you are doing nothing you are researching." Thus far today I researched Batman, Indiana Jones, and 30 Days of Night got researched. IGN got a big work out today.

If the internet is full of interesting, inspirational things... then where are they all? This is the only thing I could find today that really may help with making greating cards:
Folk Typography.

Hot. Take some time to look over it (if you are into that sorta thing). some of the letter forms are just awesome.

Shiny Binery.

Looks like there is other stuff out there. On the opposite end is this site. Really computer generated imagery. All-in-all, it's beautiful.

Big Love is on tonight. I guess I will be venturing over to Kansas to go watch the season 2 premier. It was kinda Heather and my show so it will be tough. I'm not sure if she will be joining Bob, Lauren, Donte and I, but i know she was invited.

I will be updating later with any luck. If I don't... that means I either became very distracted or never found anything worth while for research..
